Some of my other sites.

May 30th, 2007

Just quick one, here are some links to some of my other blog type sites:

1. Tumblr (Small Scale Blog) jolane.tumblr.com.
2. Twitter (What I’m doing at this point in time) twitter.com/jolane.
3. Flickr (My Images) flickr.com/photos/jolane.

I like having a blog, don’t really don’t like posting.

The title explains why I don’t post very much. I’ve decided keep my blog but build a website as the main part of my site instead of the blog.

800 vs 1024.

December 14th, 2006

Screen width, what size screen do I design to? 800px? Or 1024px? I mostly design to 800px wide because I think there are a still a lot of people out there that run that smaller screen resolution. I find looking at a page too larger for a screen more annoying than looking at a page too small, so that’s why I choose to design at 800px wide. But with an 800px width page I find that I run out of room for content and I can’t be as creative with my designs, this sometimes make the design process tedious and more time consuming. I’ve been pushing my clients to use a fluid width design rather than a fixed width but they seem to always choose fixed width because it is more expensive to design a fluid width site. In the new year I’m going to start designing all my fixed width pages at 1024px, I figure that people with smaller screens need to get out of the dark ages and upgrade.

Google Page Rank!

July 10th, 2006

Just a quick note to let everyone know that jolane.net is no longer on top the google page rank. The method I used to achieve top ranking previously was by having a h1 tag with the key words in it that I wanted google to discover. Then with the stylesheet I would make the h1 element invisible by giving the value ‘display:none;’. I would still put the metadata ‘description and keywords’ in but because of abuse by porn sites web-search engines don’t look at this information as much.

My drop in page ranking is because when I upgrade to Wordpress 2.0.3 I lost my ‘header.php’ file which had my added
tags and metadata info in it.

So I’m going to go without them for a while and see how I fair on the web searches.

[updated]

My page rank moved up to number 1 for a day and it is now 4th.

My Simple Viewer Mod.

June 9th, 2006

Simple Viewer is a photo gallery that runs on a mix of flash and XML. Looks like THIS . The way the gallery works is you upload images into a folder via ftp and then run a script that will create thumbs of each image and also create an XML file that contains gallery title and captions for the images, from the XML the gallery is created in FLASH. That process is much too complicated for you average web user. So I create a script that will automate the whole process. It’s a web form that has the ability to upload an image, add a caption and then run the buildgallery script in one click. I also added the ability to edit the captions of each image. CHECK IT OUT HERE. Just remember to empty your cache to see the changes come into effect.

It’s been a long time!

June 8th, 2006

Well this is the first post in a long time. I’m going to make more of an effort to post more stuff from now on. I decided this after setting up a blog for my good friend Evelyn and seeing that she has posted twice in a fews days it has made me feel like I need to start posting again.

Oh, and I was completely wrong with the Apple release stuff.

What is Apple going to release next?

March 20th, 2006

In about ten days time Apple will celebrate their 30th anniversary, around that date Apple will be holding a media event and possibly release new products and defiantly one more Intel powered computer. The rumors going around suggest that there will defiantly be a Intel iBook released but will be rename to Macbook. The other rumors that are floating around are that they will release a new video iPods where the whole iPod face is a screen and the click wheel will be built into a 3.5″ touch screen. The most interesting rumor that is going around is that Apple will release a phone called the iPhone. Apple owns the domain iPhone.org which does not mean much at all, but it’s a little sign that they have at least got the some plans to make a phone. Apple has also been reported to be shopping around for a electronics manufacture for a phone.

I think that apple will release new iBooks and one other product. Being the 30th anniversary of Apple think they my release a something completely new or re-release a 30th anniversary edition of one of their current products. I’m starting to think that it is going to be another iPod because the last update was in October last year.

Thoughts on Vista!

January 9th, 2006

A few days ago at the CES (Consumer Electroncis Show) Bill Gates previewed his new operating system Windows Vista. After many set backs and a name change from Longhorn to Vista it looks like that Microsoft is on target to release Vista at the end of this year. Vista has the same look and feel as Windows XP but with a more fluid and graphic hungry GUI (Graphic User Interface). The new features added to Vista are very similar to the current features that the Apple has already got for it’s OS X 10.4. They are not completely the same but are very similar.

For Example:

Windows Desktop Search ===COPY OF==> Apple’s Spotlight

Windows Sidebar & Gadgets ===COPY OF==> Apple’s Dashboard

Windows Photo Gallery ===COPY OF==> Apple’s iPhoto

Windows 3D Application Switcher ===COPY OF==> Apple’s Expose

and I’m sure there are more ….

In Microsoft’s defense they had to copy what is already out there otherwise their product would be light years behind what everyone else has already done. Nothing new or revolutionary has been added so far, Vista has just enough for Microsoft to keep up to date with what should be standard in an OS in this digital age.

All up I think that Vista will be a much better product than XP mainly because they have rewritten the code from the ground up. The result of this should be a more stable and less confusing OS, but I’m still not confident in their ability to keep Vista virus free and secure from any sort of external attack.

Jolane.net title change!

December 16th, 2005

Due to certain events in the past few weeks jolane.net is going to have a name change. “Why I have no girlfriend” is no longer a true title and a new one needs to be found. So if you have any suggestion email me at jolane@jolane.net and I’ll be glad to hear your option. The category “Why I have no girlfriend!” will now be changed to something like “Things that didn’t contribute to getting a girlfriend!” or “Nerd Stuff” not sure which one yet.
